Botox, Restylane, Juvederm & Radiesse
There are a lot of injectable anti-aging products available these days and the choices may confuse some people who wish to bring back the youthful glow in their face without surgery. Botox has been widely used for over a decade. Dermal fillers are also injectable substances that have easily gained their popularity. Unlike Botox that works by relaxing the muscles that cause wrinkling of skin without filling them in, dermal fillers like Restylane, Juvederm and Radiesse are used for filling in wrinkles, lines, scars and deep creases. Some can also be used for lip augmentation and for filling in the cheekbone area.
Botox, also known as the “facelift in a bottle”, is a non-surgical treatment involving a simple procedure that can be typically done in 10 to 15 minutes. Botox relaxes the muscles responsible for wrinkles, furrows in the forehead, crow’s feet and frown lines, and its results typically last for 4 to 6 months. Aside from beauty enhancement, Botox is also approved for treatment of eye coordination problem, ocular muscle spasms, severe perspiration in the armpit, migraine headaches, and other medical conditions.
Restylane is a clear injectable gel made of crosslinked Hyaluronic Acids (HAs) that can be found in the human body, thus eliminating the risk of allergies after the treatment. Restylane can hold water up to 1000 times its weight. Due to the nature of their crosslinking, the HAs can break down quickly. Restylane can be used anywhere for restoring volume, including the lips. Restylane treatment usually takes 30 minutes and requires little to no downtime. Its results usually last about 6 months. One of the best things about Hyaluronic Acid substance is that it can be easily removed from the skin by using hyaluronidase enzyme that digests the HAs, if the situation requires.
Juvederm is known as the second generation Hyaluronic Acid suspended in a smooth injectable gel. Juvederm works the same as Restylane, except that its results last longer than the first generation HA because of its higher crosslinking nature. Just like Restylane, it fills in the creases and depressed areas of the skin to smooth out wrinkles. The results of Juvederm treatment usually last about 9 months, and Restylane looks less lumpy under the skin.
Radiesse is another injectable dermal filler made of Calcium Hydroxylapatite, a mineral that naturally occurs in the human body. Like Restylane and Juvederm, this dermal filler increases the volume of the treated area, such as cheekbones, nasolabial creases and deep wrinkles. Radiesse is not recommended for plumping the lips and fine lines, but many experts use it along the margin of the lips to eliminate wrinkles. What it does to the skin that the other dermal fillers don’t, is that it naturally stimulates the body’s new production of collagen. The results of Radiesse typically last about a year or more, and may require light touch-up at a very small dosage after 3 to 6 months.
The Best Treatment for You
Botox is a muscle relaxant, while Restylane, Juvederm and Radiesse are dermal fillers that fill in depressed areas of the face. Although these four popular non-surgical treatments for skin aging can help you appear younger, they have different specific uses. Treatment basically depends on the condition of your skin, the severity of your skin problem, and how long you want the results to last. Only an experienced practitioner can tell whether Botox, Restylane, Juvederm, or Radiesse is the best treatment for you.
